How to start affiliate marketing when you know nothing about it?

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

I’m a 17 year old single mom with a 3 month old. Right now I’m doing independent study to graduate high school where I go to school once a week. This leaves me a lot of time at home to make some money to help around the house. I turn 18 in 2 months and have the next 5 months almost free before I start junior college. I’m not looking for a get rich plan and since I have time, I’m willing to learn everything I can before I actually get started.

How do you create websites? How do you pay per click, pay per sale, and pay per lead? How do you partner up with a merchant? How do you get people to view your site? What are impressions? Do you have to pay upfront to get started?

I’ve been doing some searches about what affiliate marketing is but it’s so confusing. I need some step by step instructions. I have the patience and am willing to learn.

OK, that’s like saying I’m going to fly to the moon, right where do I buy some fireworks from?
You need to do a lot of research and reading I’m afraid. If you can’t design websites then you should look at setting up a blog, try Google’s Blogger as that is really easy then you can progress to more advanced things like using WordPress.
Affiliate Corner will give you a good insight into the sorts of products and services out there that you can sell but if you think it is easy to make money online that you are in for a shock I’m afraid.
Forums are your best bet for researching the online arena so read as much as you can and ask as many questions as you can think of.
If you had ‘pay per click’ adverts on your website/blog then you get revenue every time someone clicks on that add on your blog. ( Google Adsense )
Impressions are how many times the advert appears when people are searching but not necessarily clicking on the advert.
Most affiliates will require a small fee to get started maybe £5.
How do you get viewers to your site, a lot of patience, a lot good content, a lot of links.

What is affiliate marketing?

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

A couple of people have mentioned this to me and although I am intrigued about learning more, I’d greatly appreciate if someone could dummy down(and I mean really dummy down…I’m talking lamens terms here lol) the process

Affiliates would best be described as "partners". You affiliate yourself with a company or a merchant to sell their products, and in return they give YOU a commission. It’s like being a salesperson, but you don’t work for a particular person or company. You work for yourself! In fact, you can be an affiliate for as many different companies and products as you want! And you don’t have to take care of customer service or taking payments either.

I found a really great website that teaches all methods of affiliate marketing. They specialize in "paid" methods, but they have videos that teach almost every single traffic method in very "simple" steps.

Affiliate Marketing can be done both offline and online. But the most common affiliate marketing that is done is mostly online. And there are tons of different ways you can do it too. There is article marketing, SEO ( search engine optimization ), forum marketing, PPC ( Pay-Per-Click ), and many other methods. The most common and easiest for beginners would definitely be article marketing. But some choose to use "paid" methods, because the traffic comes much faster.

Either way, affiliate marketing is "hands down" the cheapest and most effective way to start a legitimate business, if you do it properly.

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Can anyone tell me please which forum or information site would be best to learn about affiliate marketing more in depth? I have bought several things over the last couple of years and besides the confusion i just need guidance and people that will actually help me rather than give me ambiguous answers to my silly questions. Thank you in advance
Thank you everyone who responded i really appreciate it. There is so much to learn and it constantly changes which is worse. I like tims idea of give up and have a beer, but i do like to have a chat so i will enter the forums that have been suggested. I can’t for the life of me work out the bidding on words things and i’m not going to try. I’ll keep to advertising everyone elses stuff on my own website. Cheers Tim and thanks everyone else!

Affiliate marketing as a JOB? and where can I learn it FREE?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

I started reading about affiliate marketing and am curious if it really can be a full time
JOB.
Also I’d like to know where I can learn it for free without needing to pay some fee to someone who wants to sell me on info that may or may not work.

Any opinions?
Please answer and not just give me links with affialite id’s etc.

Can this be a real job?
Also where can a person learn for free even just a good basics course with no fees to pay?

Thanks for taking the time to answer

IF THE ANSWERS ARE GOOD PLEASE _DO_ INCLUDE THE AFFILIATE LINKS… But pls actually answer the question as well, y’know

It can be a long haul to reach the point that you can work full time as an affiliate. Particularly if you want to learn on the cheap, you would probably want to do a couple of hours in the evening after your regular job.
Bear in mind, affiliate marketing is a business, not a job, there’s no guaranteed pay check for a weeks work, in fact if using PPC sort of paid traffic you can expect to loose money for a time, while prospecting for a winning ad-product combination. Spending some money on instructional material might actually save money by shortening the initial fumbling around period, which causes many frustrated would be affiliates to quit before seeing a profit.
You might be able to find some 2nd tier instructional video on cickbank that’s a rehash of the big gurus advise for around $20, I find it helpful to look over someone’s shoulder at first.

Search the web for affiliate forum, you should be able to find discussions by people in the trenches, while affiliate oriented blogs will offer helpful free articles, you can find lots of tutorial information on using adwords ppc on the google web site, though google is making it tougher for affiliates, who they view as unneeded street hustlers.

I don’t know how to write a blog or create one for affiliate marketing. Is college recommended?

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

I’m thinking about going to college to learn affiliate marketing. I’m very new to it. I have bought the making money at home program and about Clickbank and how to make money. I saw the training video and read books, but still didn’t help me. I don’t have good reading comprehension to know how to do it.

Do you recommends that I goto college or a university to get help?

Anyone used Affiliate Theme on WordPress?

Friday, February 18th, 2011

I’m trying to start into affiliate marketing but wondered if this is the best way for me to go. I am also learning HTML and CSS coding, so I thought whether or not I should creae my own landing websites as this would be alot cheaper for me. Is Affiliate Theme worth going for or should I learn the skills myself? Do the affiliate theme last for a year or what? Cheers.

I got into affiliate marketing in 1997. I never learned to code a site from scratch. I started out using the free FrontPage Express that used to come with Windows. Then I upgraded to the paid version and stuck with it for years. Also bought Expression Web when Microsoft completely rewrote FrontPage from the ground up. I had a lot of money invested into software.

Then I started getting involved with WordPress and when I saw how easy it was to deploy a site and NOT to have to mess around with creating web pages, I shelved all of my old website building software.

However, since I’m not a coder, I was stuck with other peoples’ free WordPress themes and that was frustrating because I didn’t always like the colors and especially didn’t like the header graphics.

Then I found some WordPress theme builder software called Artisteer http://goo.gl/VV02Y and I started building my own WordPress themes and never looked back.

So in answer to your question about learning the skills yourself, don’t do it unless you plan on making a career out of it. Simply because you’ll have no time left to promote your affiliate products. But, therein lies the magic with Affiliate Theme…it’s all about getting those sites up fast without having to code.

Affiliate Theme seems like a pretty powerful theme. I thought it was a little pricey at $147. Artisteer is less than $50 and you can make endless themes for both WordPress and Blogger. (The pro version also makes Joomla, Drupal, DotNetNuke, ASP.net and CodeCharge Studio templates.) That’s more creativity for less money.

Affiliate Theme is heavily geared towards images and a lot of affiliate offers don’t allow you to copy images from their home website, you have to use the banners they provide. I think Affiliate Theme would look a little sparse if the images where missing or if you didn’t have offers to place within all of the cells. Not sure what you do with blank cells as in that 4-column layout.

All in all, I think Affiliate Theme is a great theme, just plan ahead when chosing layouts for the products you’ll be promoting. It’s cool that you can use it on unlimited domains. A lot of paid themes require you to purchase a developer license to be able to do that. One thing that I don’t like is that you don’t get access to the documentation in their resource center unless you buy the theme. I’d like to know what happens if you start off with one layout and then later on want to switch to a different one. Questions like that should be answered upfront. They also say they have a support forum, but it’s a dead link. Same with suggestions for web hosting companies. Another dead link.

Is this a Pyramid Scheme?

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Okay, so a family friend has experience in affiliate marketing (advertising for websites in order to get commission payments when people click her ads and buy the company’s product), which is fine and totally legal. However, she has offered to teach me (and is looking for others) how to make websites for affiliate marketing and how to make money off it, and in return she would take a portion of what I earn. So, what I want to know, is this a pyramid scheme? I don’t think the friend would intentionally plan something illegal like that, but I don’t want to get involved in something potentially rocky. I also feel like I would rather just learn to do affiliate marketing on my own, and keep 100% on what I would earn from commissions. So I guess I’m looking for advice on if it would be wiser to learn affiliate marketing on my own or with someone’s help, and also if this would constitute a pyramid scheme or not. Many thanks.

The way you have described it, this is not a pyramid scheme. A pyramid scheme is where your you pay money to join a business opportunity and your friend gets part or all of that payment.

In your situation your friend gets paid based on what you eventually earn, not just for you taking part. Your friend is getting paid for ‘teaching you’ and is suggesting a fee based on success rather than charging a set fee.

So I very much doubt that the arrangement is illegal. If you think that you could learn a lot from your friend and if you are willing to pay for that teaching you could perhaps agree a set fee if you feel better with that.
