Network Marketing, (also called Multi-level marketing (MLM) , direct selling, and referral marketing,) is a term that describes a marketing structure used by some companies as part of their overall marketing strategy. The structure is designed to create a marketing and sales force by compensating promoters of company products not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of other promoters they introduce to the company, creating a down line of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation.

The products and company are usually marketed directly to consumers and potential business partners by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing.

MLM companies have been a frequent subject of controversy as well as the target of lawsuits. Criticism has focused on their similarity to illegal pyramid schemes, price-fixing of products, high initial start-up costs, emphasis on recruitment of lower-tiered salespeople over actual sales, encouraging if not requiring salespeople to purchase and use the company’s products, potential exploitation of personal relationships which are used as new sales and recruiting targets, complex and sometimes exaggerated compensation schemes, and cult-like techniques which some groups use to enhance their members’ enthusiasm and devotion. Not all MLM companies operate the same way, and MLM groups have persistently denied that their techniques are anything but legitimate business practices.

It is pretty much an online job and you can make a lot of money if you’re good. I will use bodybuilding as an example. There is a lot of competition and many products (supplements) on the market. A retailer (the parent) may be trying to sell his products, but does not want to spend money putting up ads on bodybuilding-related websites because it can get expensive.

This is where an affiliate marketer comes in. You can create your own separate individual website with your own money to attract viewers. You can attract viewers by giving advice and writing articles on bodybuilding. You can promote your "parent’s" products with links. The links will redirect your viewers to your "parent’s" website where they will purchase the products. The parent will be able to track which affiliate website redirected customers to their site. If the viewer purchases a product from the parent, you will get commission.

You are basically a promoter for the parent company. It is cheaper for the parent because they will pay you only when a sale was successful from your website’s referral.

I want to sign up for a pretty popular affiliate marketing network. They require your SS# to report your earnings. Also when you sign up they ask you to confirm that you are 18 years old. If I give them my name and SS#, can they find out my age when they report the income to the IRS?

What is the point where its considered MLM? I know that network marketing requires registrations in several U.S. states. I want to create a multi-tiered affiliate program that’s at least 2 tiers, and maybe up to 10. I’ve heard that 2 tier affiliate programs are legal in all 50 states but I wasn’t sure about 5 or 10 tiered affiliate programs.

Multi-tier affiliate programs ARE MLM! If you go to 5 or 10 tiers, you are quite likely to be investigated (or charged) for Ponzi-Scheme type of fraud. You absolutely must hire a good attorney on this one, someone with experience in setting up MLM and multi-tier affiliate marketing. Failure to get a good attorney to advise you on this and draft proper legal agreements for affiliates will definitely cost you a bundle, and could quite likely land you in jail.

Hill Named Senior Vice President, Marketing

STAMFORD, Conn., Jun 07, 2010 — World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. announced that Eddie Hill will assume the role of Senior Vice President, Marketing, effective June 7, 2010. Hill will be responsible for providing strategic direction around WWE’s branding and promotions, television tune-in, pay-per-view events, network affiliate Marketing, WWE Studios and Market research. He will report directly to Michelle D. Wilson, Executive Vice President, Marketing.

Hill brings 18 years of experience as a marketing executive within the financial, sports and entertainment industries. He comes to WWE from American Express after he spent the last two years as Vice President/Head of U.S. Advertising & Global Agency Management and spearheaded the Are You A Cardmember? and Don’t Take Chances – Take Charge campaigns.

Prior to American Express, Hill was the Vice President of Marketing for Nickelodeon and Nick Movies. He has also held positions at ESPN and the Walt Disney Company.

"We are thrilled to have Eddie join WWE, bringing with him a great breadth and depth of valuable experience in the sports and entertainment industries," said Michelle D. Wilson.
