what is an mlm or network marketing?
i am looking to join one, anybody got an idea ( and no stupid affiliate links please)
while the previous answers have more than clarified on what mlm is, i would like to add that the biggest test to decide a good mlm company is – they will be looking for buyers to buy their products, while a bad one will be looking for sellers to get more sellers for their xyz products.

it is basically a company where u can earn money from home. You sell products and some can make money shopping online as well. Many of them are scams so be careful. Multi-level marketing (MLM), (also called network marketing) is a term that describes a marketing structure used by some companies as part of their overall marketing strategy.
The structure is designed to create a marketing and sales force by compensating promoters of company products not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of other promoters they introduce to the company, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation in the form of a pyramid.
The products and company are usually marketed directly to consumers and potential business partners by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing.
Examples include Amway, Mona Vie, Herbalife and Mary Kay.

Even by employing the right strategies and specific rules of network marketing it can still be tough to grip a revenue. The prospective entrepreneurs have a strong belief in themselves and their product that carry them through. The current economy makes it difficult for any business plan to work, even the most well conceived.

Network marketing is marketing through the network of people you know as friends, family, coworkers, or acquaintances. The MLM part of it is the fact that as a distributor you can earn more revenues by finding other like-minded entrepreneurs looking for another way to earn some cash.
You want to watch out for Pyramid Schemes though which differ from MLM or network marketing opportunities. In a Pyramid Scheme the business volume (money) comes from recruitment, not the sale of products. Any legitimate MLM opportunity will focus on product sales rather than recruitment.
That being said, you want to find an opportunity in an expanding market. For example, you would not want to get involved in any opportunity selling toothpaste since Colgate and Crest have the market basically completely controlled. The product should be unique (so you are the only one that has it) and consumable (so that customers reorder every month and you get paid every time they reorder).
I would suggest any opportunity in the health and wellness industries since this is the next big trend to hit according to Paul Zane Pilzner (world renowned economist and economic advisor to multiple Presidential administrations).
